Project Architect – Public Health & Laboratory Infrastructure (Consultant)

About the role

eHealth Africa is seeking a Project Architect (Consultant) to lead the design and implementation of public health laboratory and related infrastructure across Africa. The role focuses on creating fit‑for‑purpose facilities that meet international biosafety standards and support sustainable diagnostic services.

Key responsibilities

• Develop architectural designs, drawings, schedules and specifications for laboratories, surveillance facilities and medical supply hubs.
• Produce 3D illustrations and visualisations to aid design reviews, stakeholder engagement and regulatory approvals.
• Translate laboratory and diagnostic workflows into functional layouts ensuring one‑way flow of samples, personnel and waste.
• Integrate biosafety zoning and infection‑prevention principles into all designs.
• Align designs with constructability, cost considerations and approved project scope.
• Ensure compliance with national building regulations, statutory requirements and WHO biosafety guidelines.
• Conduct feasibility studies, technical risk assessments and propose mitigation strategies.
• Coordinate architectural inputs with multidisciplinary teams including MEP, HVAC and structural engineers.
• Engage ministries of health, donors, WHO and other regulatory authorities throughout the project lifecycle.

Required profile

• Professional architect with experience in health‑care or laboratory facility design.
• Strong understanding of biosafety, infection‑control and international laboratory standards.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with engineers, project managers and external stakeholders.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting technical concepts to diverse audiences.
