Project Architect - Public Health & Laboratory Infrastructure (Consultant)

About the role

eHealth Africa is seeking a Consultant Project Architect to lead the design and implementation of public health laboratory and related infrastructure across Africa. You will translate laboratory workflows into functional, safe, and cost‑effective facilities that meet international biosafety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop architectural designs, drawings, schedules and specifications for laboratories, surveillance facilities and medical supply hubs.
• Create 3D illustrations and visualisations to support design reviews and stakeholder engagement.
• Translate diagnostic workflows into functional layouts ensuring one‑way flow of samples, personnel and waste.
• Integrate biosafety zoning and infection‑prevention principles into all designs.
• Align designs with constructability, cost considerations and approved project scope.
• Ensure compliance with national building regulations, statutory requirements and WHO laboratory biosafety guidelines.
• Conduct feasibility studies, technical risk assessments and propose mitigation strategies.
• Coordinate architectural inputs with multidisciplinary teams including MEP, HVAC and structural engineers.
• Engage ministries of health, regulatory authorities, donors and WHO to secure approvals.

Required profile

• Professional degree in Architecture or related field.
• Proven experience designing public health or laboratory facilities.
• Strong understanding of biosafety, infection‑control and WHO laboratory standards.
• Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, project managers and government stakeholders.

Required skills
