The position reports to the Technical Superintendent in Dubai and is based in Lagos.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee technical management, planned maintenance, vessel condition monitoring and defect resolution across the assigned tankers.
  • Attend vessels at Nigerian ports and anchorages to manage breakdowns, repairs and technical emergencies.
  • Prepare repair and dry-docking specifications, evaluate vendor quotations and supervise repair works.
  • Ensure vessels remain ready for SIRE/CDI vetting, Port State Control, flag and class surveys.
  • Review technical requisitions, coordinate spare parts procurement and verify vendor invoices.
  • Monitor technical expenditure, contribute to fleet budgets and report regularly to management.
  • Liaise with NIMASA, classification societies, local shipyards, surveyors and service providers.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to onboard Chief Engineers.

Required profile

  • Class 1 Motor or Combined Certificate of Competency (CoC) from a recognised authority, with a valid NIMASA endorsement; steam-only certificates are not accepted.
  • Recent experience as Chief Engineer on chemical or product tankers with two-stroke main engines (MAN B&W or equivalent) within the last five years.
  • Previous experience with an established tanker management company.
  • Based in Lagos or willing to relocate; candidates with LNG-only or offshore-only experience, or those seeking to return to sea, will not be considered.
  • Previous shore-based experience as an Assistant or Technical Superintendent is an added advantage.

Required skills

  • Strong knowledge of SIRE/CDI vetting, planned maintenance systems and dry-docking procedures.
  • Knowledge of Nigerian shipyards, NIMASA, classification societies and local maritime vendors is desirable.
  • Strong technical judgement, problem-solving, reporting and communication skills.
  • Integrity, independence and accountability in technical and procurement decisions.
