Senior Medical Officer - Obstetrics & Gynaecology / Surgery

About the role

A full-time, on-site Senior Medical Officer position in Lagos, Nigeria, covering Obstetrics & Gynaecology and General Surgery. The role provides experienced clinical care with a high degree of independence, supports consultant-led services, supervises junior medical personnel and ensures safe, evidence-based, patient-centred care. It reports to the Consultant or Head of Department.

Key responsibilities

• Take patient histories, examine patients and make diagnoses
• Manage obstetric, gynaecological and surgical patients within scope of competence
• Support clinics, ward rounds, theatre and emergency services
• Handle high-risk obstetric cases and surgical emergencies, escalating complex cases
• Provide preoperative assessment and postoperative monitoring
• Supervise and guide medical officers, interns and house officers
• Coordinate care with consultants, nursing, midwifery, laboratory, radiology and pharmacy
• Maintain clinical notes, operative documentation and discharge summaries
• Take part in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews and quality improvement
• Promote infection prevention and control, patient safety and professional ethics

Required profile

• MBBS or MBChB from a recognised institution, completed housemanship/internship
• NYSC completion or valid exemption certificate
• Full MDCN registration and a valid annual practising licence
• Minimum 5 years of post-NYSC clinical experience, with substantial experience in OBGYN and surgery
• Desirable: postgraduate training, membership exams or additional clinical qualifications

Required skills

• Sound clinical judgement, diagnostic reasoning and treatment planning
• Recognition and response to obstetric and surgical emergencies
• Ability to supervise and mentor junior medical personnel
• Good clinical documentation and patient-counselling skills
• Understanding of infection prevention and control, clinical governance and patient safety
