About the role
The BBC World Service is building a Regional Journalism team to deliver original, agenda‑setting journalism across West Africa. Based in Abuja, the Senior Digital Reporter will create high‑impact visual and digital stories that resonate with Hausa‑speaking audiences and the wider region.
Key responsibilities
- Apply strong editorial judgment to identify compelling angles and make complex stories engaging for target audiences.
- Ensure cultural and linguistic authenticity for Hausa‑speaking communities, reflecting diversity and lived experiences.
- Support coverage of major news events and special programmes while remaining agile to breaking developments.
- Use AI‑enabled tools responsibly to improve speed, efficiency and creativity, maintaining full editorial oversight.
- Exercise editorial independence, making informed decisions on story direction with minimal supervision.
- Maintain exceptional attention to detail in language, translation, subtitles and all editorial content.
- Contribute ideas and practical approaches to continuously improve storytelling and digital output across the team.
Required profile
- Fluent in both Hausa and English with a deep understanding of West African political, social and conflict dynamics.
- Proven ability to produce high‑quality digital content that engages audiences and builds loyalty.
- Strong editorial judgment and the capacity to work independently in a fast‑moving news environment.
- Commitment to BBC editorial standards and ethical journalism.
