Senior Backend Engineer – Java

About the role

The Senior Backend Engineer will design, develop, and maintain high‑performance backend services for a leading African financial services institution. You will work with product, frontend, DevOps, and security teams to deliver secure, scalable platforms that handle millions of transactions.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable Java services using Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.
• Architect micro‑services and API platforms for high‑volume financial transactions.
• Build and optimise data access layers with relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle) and NoSQL databases.
• Implement secure authentication, authorisation, and data‑protection mechanisms.
• Ensure reliability, performance tuning, and fault tolerance in production.
• Lead code reviews, enforce best practices, and mentor mid‑level engineers.
• Collaborate with DevOps on CI/CD pipelines, containerisation, and cloud deployments.
• Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to long‑term platform strategy.

Required profile

• 6+ years of professional backend engineering experience, primarily with Java.
• Strong background in micro‑services, distributed systems, and regulated financial environments.
• Proven ability to design performant, scalable systems and optimise them for high throughput.
