Public Health Assistant – Community Health

About the role

We are seeking a Public Health Assistant to support community health education, disease prevention, and primary health‑care activities in Lagos. The role involves engaging with communities, supporting health campaigns, and ensuring accurate data collection and reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct health talks in communities, schools, markets and faith‑based organisations, educating on maternal & child health, immunisation, malaria, HIV/TB, nutrition, WASH and NCDs.
• Mobilise community leaders, volunteers and WDCs for health programmes, address myths and promote positive health behaviours.
• Support routine immunisation and campaigns (Polio, Measles, COVID‑19, HPV) and participate in disease surveillance, case finding, contact tracing and reporting.
• Distribute health commodities such as ITNs, ORS/Zinc, deworming tablets, family‑planning items and IEC materials.
• Collect community‑level data using registers, tally sheets, ODK, KoboToolbox or CommCare and compile weekly/monthly reports for DHIS2, facilities and donors.
• Assist CHEWs, nurses and public health officers at PHCs with patient flow, ANC registration, growth monitoring and vaccine handling.
• Liaise with community gatekeepers, LGA officials and attend ward/LGA review meetings, providing feedback for programme planning.

Required profile

• Minimum OND in Community Health, Public Health, Health Education, Environmental Health or related field.
• At least 1 year of relevant experience; internships or volunteering with NGOs, PHCs or health campaigns are accepted.
• JCHEW/CHEW certificate for PHC roles and a discharge/exemption certificate.
• Fluent in clear English and at least one local language, with ability to simplify health information.
