Phlebotomist

About the role

The Phlebotomist will collect blood samples from patients of all ages for laboratory testing, donation, or research at the African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja. The role ensures sample quality, patient comfort, and adherence to safety and infection‑control standards.

Key responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures accurately, selecting appropriate sites and minimizing discomfort.
• Label, handle, transport, and centrifuge blood specimens according to laboratory protocols.
• Maintain and troubleshoot phlebotomy equipment and manage inventory of supplies.
• Document patient information and test results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and follow quality‑control procedures.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare‑related field and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Minimum one year of phlebotomy experience, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, and optional arterial puncture.
• Knowledge of infection‑control principles, medical terminology, and laboratory safety practices.
• Professional attitude, proactive organization, and ability to inspire confidence in patients and colleagues.

Required skills

• Venipuncture on patients of all ages.
• Capillary and arterial puncture techniques.
• Use of centrifuges and Laboratory Information System (LIS) for data entry.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
