About the role
The Medical Laboratory Scientist – Stem Cell will lead and optimise experiments in stem cell biology, cellular reprogramming, differentiation and regenerative medicine within the African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja.
Key responsibilities
- Design and execute stem cell research projects, including hypothesis development, protocol optimisation and timeline management.
- Perform advanced cell culture techniques, maintaining pluripotent and adult stem cell lines, and conduct cellular reprogramming using Yamanaka factors, episomal vectors or chemical methods.
- Differentiate stem cells into target cell types such as neurons, cardiomyocytes or hepatocytes and apply gene‑editing tools like CRISPR/Cas9 for functional studies.
- Run immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry and high‑throughput screening assays to assess cellular phenotypes and ensure data quality.
- Maintain laboratory compliance with GMP, FDA and HFEA standards, perform routine mycoplasma and contamination checks, and update SOPs and risk assessments.
- Collect, document and analyse experimental data using electronic lab notebooks, statistical software and bioinformatics tools for RNA‑seq and single‑cell sequencing.
- Collaborate with molecular biologists, bioinformaticians and clinicians, contribute to grant applications, manuscripts and conference presentations.
- Oversee inventory, equipment calibration and mentor junior scientists and technicians in stem cell techniques.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field; Master’s degree is a plus.
- 1‑4 years of experience in a stem cell laboratory with progressive responsibility.
- Demonstrated expertise in stem cell isolation, culture, differentiation and characterisation.
- Proficiency in molecular biology methods such as PCR, flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry.
- Knowledge of ethical and regulatory requirements for stem cell research (GMP, FDA, HFEA).
