Mechanical Design Engineer – Physical Robotics

About the role

We are creating a new category of indoor autonomous hardware and need a Mechanical Design Engineer to define the structural architecture, actuation systems, and manufacturability of the product. You will translate creative concepts into safe, reliable, and production‑ready hardware while collaborating closely with design and firmware teams.

Key responsibilities

• Own the mechanical architecture, including chassis, housing, internal layout, and load paths.
• Design for injection‑moulded polymers, specifying wall thickness, draft angles, radio‑transparent apertures, and thermal limits.
• Perform tolerance stack‑up and structural (FEA) analyses to validate designs before tooling.
• Specify and integrate motors, gearboxes, joints, and drive mechanisms, managing velocity, acceleration, and duty‑cycle constraints.
• Develop docking, charging, and other mechanical interfaces for repeatable durability.
• Take concepts through rapid prototyping (3D printing, CNC) to production‑ready tooling, applying DFM/DFA principles.
• Collaborate with industrial designers, animators, firmware, and electrical engineers to ensure feasibility and close gaps between intent and reality.

Required profile

• Mechanical engineering degree or equivalent hands‑on experience.
• Proven experience with design‑for‑manufacture, injection moulding, and material selection for engineering polymers.
• Background designing small‑form‑factor consumer electronics or robotics enclosures with tight space, weight, and cost constraints.
• Experience specifying and integrating motors, gearboxes, and actuation systems.
• Comfortable moving designs from prototype to production, including hands‑on 3D printing and CNC work.

Required skills

• Proficiency in 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360.
• Tolerance stack‑up analysis.
• Structural and finite‑element analysis (FEA).
• Scripting for design automation (e.g., Python).
• Knowledge of injection‑moulded polymer processes.
