Laboratory Technician – Blood Bank

About the role

The African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja is seeking a Laboratory Technician for its Blood Bank. The role involves performing routine and specialized tests, processing donations, and ensuring safe handling and storage of blood products.

Key responsibilities

• Collect and screen blood donations, perform eligibility assessments, and test for infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B/C, and syphilis.
• Conduct ABO and Rh typing, antibody screening, and cross‑matching to confirm compatibility for transfusions.
• Prepare, label, and distribute blood components (red cells, plasma, platelets) to clinical departments according to physician orders.
• Maintain accurate inventory, perform quality‑control checks on reagents and equipment, and document all activities in compliance with regulatory standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or related field.
• Minimum of 1 year experience in a blood bank setting, demonstrating competence in blood typing, antibody screening and compatibility testing.
• Professional attitude, high integrity, and ability to work collaboratively with clinicians and staff.

Required skills

• Blood typing (ABO, Rh) and cross‑matching.
• Antibody screening and identification.
• Serological testing and hemoglobin electrophoresis.
• Centrifugation and blood component separation.
• Quality‑control procedures for reagents and equipment.
