Geographic Information System (GIS) Officer

About the role

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking a Geographic Information System (GIS) Officer for its Nigeria Country Program, based at Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi State. The officer will support ranger and biomonitoring teams by managing spatial data, producing maps, and training staff on GPS and SMART monitoring tools.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, validate, and maintain spatial databases of species distribution, patrol coverage and threat layers.
• Produce maps and conduct GIS analyses on wildlife sightings, patrol routes and illegal activities using ArcGIS and QGIS.
• Integrate remote sensing data with field observations and support dashboard development.
• Train field rangers on GPS navigation, data collection workflows and SMART‑based monitoring systems.
• Prepare spatial inputs for donor reports, technical briefs and executive presentations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science or related field (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum 3 years of hands‑on GIS mapping and spatial database administration, preferably in conservation or natural resource management.
• Fluency in written and spoken English; willingness to live and work in remote field conditions.
