Consultant Psychiatrist

About the role

The Consultant Psychiatrist will lead specialist assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of patients with acute and complex mental health conditions at the African Medical Centre of Excellence. The role spans outpatient, inpatient, emergency and liaison settings, ensuring safe, evidence‑based, compassionate care.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, risk evaluations and formulate individualized treatment plans.
• Provide consultant‑led services across outpatient, inpatient, emergency and consultation‑liaison psychiatry.
• Prescribe, review and monitor psychotropic medication in line with guidelines and manage drug interactions.
• Lead multidisciplinary case reviews and collaborate with physicians, surgeons, nurses, psychologists and allied health professionals.
• Develop and implement clinical pathways, protocols and quality‑improvement initiatives for mental health care.
• Supervise junior doctors, mentor trainees and contribute to teaching, research and service evaluation.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years post‑fellowship experience in specialist psychiatric practice.
• MBBS or equivalent medical degree and Fellowship in Psychiatry from a recognised college.
• Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and a valid practising licence.
• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary teams and developing clinical services in a tertiary hospital.
• Demonstrated involvement in teaching, clinical governance, audit, quality improvement or research.
• Strong clinical judgement, communication and leadership skills with a commitment to ethical, patient‑centred care.
