Consultant – Policy Brief on Community‑Centered Just Energy Transition

About the role
The consultant will research and develop a policy brief that outlines a community‑centered approach to a just energy transition in Nigeria. The work focuses on the emerging demand for critical minerals, the associated governance gaps, and how to ensure that mining host communities are respected as rights‑holders throughout the transition.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review on global and Nigerian policies related to renewable energy, mineral extraction, and community rights.
- Analyse existing legal and regulatory frameworks, including the implementation of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and benefit‑sharing mechanisms.
- Engage with secondary data sources and, where possible, remote consultations with affected communities and stakeholders.
- Draft a concise, evidence‑based policy brief that provides actionable recommendations for policymakers, investors, and civil‑society actors.
- Present findings and recommendations to the Global Rights team and relevant partners.
Required profile
- Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in environmental policy, energy studies, development studies, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience conducting research on mineral governance, community rights, or energy transition, preferably in West Africa.
- Strong analytical, writing, and synthesis skills with the ability to produce clear policy documents.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and communicate findings effectively.
