Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

About the role

The Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon will deliver independent surgical and non‑surgical care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions, covering the full patient journey from diagnosis to long‑term follow‑up. The role includes clinical leadership, supervision of junior staff, and participation in research and teaching activities.

Key responsibilities

• Lead inpatient ward rounds and outpatient clinics, managing elective and trauma orthopaedic cases.
• Perform a wide range of orthopaedic procedures, including fracture fixation, joint arthroplasty, arthroscopy and selected spinal surgeries.
• Ensure compliance with infection‑control protocols, surgical safety checklists and postoperative monitoring.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, communicate with patients and families, and coordinate discharge planning.
• Participate in quality‑improvement programmes, clinical audits and research initiatives.

Required profile

• MBBS or equivalent with a fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery recognised in Nigeria.
• Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and a valid practising licence.
• Minimum five years post‑fellowship experience with a strong surgical portfolio.
• Demonstrated ability to manage orthopaedic emergencies and complex cases independently.
• Proven leadership and teaching experience for junior medical staff.

Required skills

• Closed fracture reduction and cast/splint application.
• Internal and external fracture fixation, joint arthroplasty, arthroscopic surgery.
• Interpretation of orthopaedic imaging (X‑ray, CT, MRI).
• Use of orthopaedic surgical instruments, power tools and traction equipment.
• Administration of peri‑operative pharmacological regimens (analgesics, antibiotics, anticoagulants).
