About the role
The Consultant Emergency Medicine Physician provides high‑quality, rapid assessment and definitive treatment for a wide range of acute illnesses and injuries in the Emergency Department. This senior clinician leads a multidisciplinary team, ensures patient flow, and contributes to clinical governance, education and research within a Nigerian hospital setting.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver advanced assessment, diagnosis and management of medical and surgical emergencies, including resuscitation and emergency procedures such as intubation, central line and chest tube placement.
- Lead the emergency team during shifts, overseeing workload distribution, resource allocation and staffing.
- Develop, implement and audit clinical pathways, protocols and quality‑improvement initiatives to enhance safety and efficiency.
- Supervise, mentor and train junior doctors, medical students and nursing staff, organising teaching sessions and providing regular feedback.
- Monitor clinical outcomes, participate in audits, incident reviews and ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Collaborate with critical care, radiology, surgery and external agencies such as ambulance services to coordinate patient care.
- Promote research activities, publish findings and present at professional conferences.
- Lead Equality & Diversity initiatives within the department.
Required profile
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree with a valid medical licence.
- Fellowship in Emergency Medicine and minimum five years post‑specialisation experience.
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certifications.
- Post‑graduate qualification in critical care or pre‑hospital medicine.
- Proven expertise in managing complex, high‑acuity cases, preferably in resource‑limited settings.
- Research experience with publications in emergency‑medicine journals.
