Board Member – 3-Year Term

About the role

The Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organisation (WEWE) is seeking a dedicated Board Member for a renewable three-year term. The role is based in Abuja and is ideal for senior professionals who share WEWE’s mission to support widows, orphans and vulnerable families.

Key responsibilities

• Design, participate in and drive fundraising campaigns.
• Provide strategic leadership, governance and oversight of WEWE’s vision, mission, values and objectives.
• Select, appoint, support and conduct annual performance reviews of the Executive Director.
• Develop, review and approve organisational policies, work plans, budgets, staff salaries and compensation packages.
• Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and submit required annual returns.
• Assess organisational performance across programmes, finance, operations and partnerships.
• Appoint external auditors, review audit reports and ensure financial transparency.
• Initiate or defend legal actions on behalf of WEWE and manage corporate filings with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of senior leadership experience (e.g., Head of Department, CEO, Chief of Party).
• Professional registration or certification such as Chartered Accountant, Auditor, Senior Lawyer, Medical Doctor, Public Health Practitioner, Banker or Financial Expert.
• Demonstrated experience in NGO governance, donor‑funded projects or similar non‑profit environments.
• Residency in Abuja or willingness to attend regular board meetings onsite.
