About the role
The Assistant Editor leads the day‑to‑day editorial output of BBC Igbo, supporting the Nigeria Languages Editor and reporting to the News Editor. The role ensures the service delivers independent, impartial journalism to a young audience in Nigeria and the diaspora, while maintaining editorial autonomy and upholding BBC Editorial Guidelines.
Key responsibilities
- Commission, shape and deliver high‑impact original journalism, including exclusives, investigations and explainers.
- Collaborate with other Assistant Editors and the News Editor to set shared editorial priorities and coordinate cross‑service coverage.
- Develop and implement a data‑driven video strategy aimed at increasing reach among younger and female audiences.
- Use audience insight, analytics and platform trends to inform commissioning, distribution and editorial decisions.
- Apply performance data to editorial planning, track growth against targets and embed a culture of performance awareness within the team.
- Identify gaps and opportunities in audience reach and adjust content mix, formats and priorities accordingly.

- Strong editorial judgement and the courage to defend impartial decisions under pressure.
- Clear digital ambition and the ability to sustain momentum, grow audience reach and deliver strategic goals.
- Excellent journalistic instincts and a commitment to rigorous, independent reporting.
Required skills
- Proficiency with analytics tools for audience insight and performance tracking.
