Assistant Editor – Digital Video Journalism

About the role

The Assistant Editor will drive BBC Hausa’s shift to a digital‑first, video‑led service. Working from Abuja, you will help build a modern newsroom that reaches younger and female audiences on smartphones and social platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the transformation of BBC Hausa into a video‑centric operation, fostering a culture of high editorial ambition and continuous learning.
• Commission, shape and deliver original journalism—including exclusives, investigations and explainers—optimised for digital platforms.
• Collaborate with the editorial leadership team to align priorities, coordinate cross‑service coverage and minimise duplication.
• Develop and implement a data‑driven video strategy to grow reach among target audiences.
• Use audience insights, analytics and platform trends to inform commissioning, distribution and editorial decisions.
• Embed performance awareness, helping journalists understand engagement drivers and improve output.
• Oversee the effective use of AI tools in research, translation, transcription, editing and optimisation while maintaining editorial standards.

Required profile

• Experienced editor with strong journalistic instincts and a passion for digital storytelling.
• Proven ability to lead teams through significant change and maintain editorial integrity.
• Legal right to work in Nigeria and completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or an exemption certificate.
