Senior/Lead AI & ML Engineer

About the role

Seismic Consulting Group is building production‑grade AI systems that power high‑stakes workflows for governments and mission‑driven organisations across Africa. We need a senior/lead AI & ML engineer who has shipped LLM‑based solutions to production and can set technical direction while still writing code.

Key responsibilities

• Define architecture and roadmap for AI/ML products, including model selection, fine‑tuning, prompting and retrieval‑augmented generation.
• Own end‑to‑end delivery of AI/ML features, building model‑serving, inference pipelines and GPU/compute optimisation.
• Implement MLOps practices: CI/CD, containerised deployments, monitoring, logging and alerting.
• Design and maintain data pipelines, storage architecture and data‑quality frameworks for structured and unstructured data.
• Lead and mentor the AI/ML engineering team, set engineering standards and support recruitment.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics or related field; master’s preferred.
• Minimum 8 years of hands‑on AI/ML engineering experience, with proven production deployments of LLM‑based systems.
• Experience leading or mentoring engineers and working with cloud infrastructure, containerisation and orchestration.

Required skills

• Large language models (open‑ and closed‑source), prompt engineering, fine‑tuning.
• Retrieval‑augmented generation, vector databases, knowledge‑retrieval systems.
• Cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerisation (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes).
• MLOps tools, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and logging frameworks.
• Data engineering at scale: pipelines, warehousing, data quality management.
