Palliative Care Specialist

About the role

The Palliative Care Specialist is responsible for providing compassionate, patient‑centered care to individuals with cancer and haematological disorders who require palliative care services. The role involves managing symptoms, enhancing quality of life, and supporting patients and their families throughout the course of illness.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive palliative care to patients with cancer and haematological conditions, focusing on symptom relief and quality of life.
• Develop and implement individualized care plans addressing pain, nausea, fatigue, dyspnoea and other symptoms.
• Administer and adjust opioid and adjuvant medications, monitoring patient response.
• Collaborate with oncologists, haematologists, nurses and other professionals to integrate palliative care into overall treatment.
• Guide patients and families through advance care planning, DNR decisions and end‑of‑life preferences.
• Educate patients, families and the multidisciplinary team on palliative care principles and symptom management.
• Maintain accurate documentation, ensure compliance with hospital and regulatory standards, and participate in quality‑improvement initiatives.
• Engage in clinical research and continuous professional development activities related to palliative oncology and haematology.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent) with completed residency program.
• Valid medical license and registration with relevant Nigerian authorities.
• Membership in professional bodies such as the Nigerian Palliative Care Association.
• Minimum 3‑5 years of clinical experience in oncology or haematology, with post‑basic training in the specialty.
• Demonstrated experience in palliative and end‑of‑life care, including symptom and pain management.
• Proven ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and support patients and families in crisis.
