Onboard Ship Supervisor

About the role

The Onboard Ship Supervisor ensures that cargo discharge operations are carried out quickly, safely and accurately, providing real‑time updates and reports to senior management.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect and confirm functionality of ship gears, hatches, cranes and discharge mechanisms before and during cargo operations.
• Coordinate stevedoring teams and dockworkers to commence cargo discharge immediately upon vessel berthing.
• Monitor daily discharge speeds, delivering accurate operational updates to the Head of Shipping.
• Liaise with terminal operations at GDNL and Lekki facilities and internal logistics departments to optimise cargo evacuation workflows.
• Prepare and distribute daily Vessel Situation Reports (SITREPs) covering tonnage moved, shift performance and milestones.
• Issue Letters of Protest (LOP) for gear breakdowns, terminal delays or weather disruptions to protect the company from unfair demurrage claims.
• Enforce corporate policies and maritime safety regulations throughout onboard activities.

Required profile

• Practical knowledge of onboard shipping operations, vessel cargo‑handling procedures and stevedoring management.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with ship captains, multinational crews, port authorities and external partners.
• Ability to make quick, reasoned decisions on deck and handle operational bottlenecks or dock‑worker disputes.
• High physical fitness and resilience to work independently in demanding onboard environments.
• Minimum HND in Maritime Transport, Shipping/Ports Operations, Supply Chain Management, Logistics or related field.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for drafting reports and logs.
