Igbo Service Journalist

About the role

BBC World Service is expanding its Igbo Service editorial team in Lagos, moving to a video‑led, story‑focused model that reaches Igbo‑speaking audiences on smartphones and social media. The role combines news writing, video production and social‑media publishing across multiple platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Create and publish accurate, SEO‑friendly news articles for the BBC Igbo website, ensuring timely updates.
• Produce, shoot and edit short‑form video content for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and other digital platforms.
• Develop and publish engaging social‑media posts that drive audience interaction and expand reach.
• Respond quickly to breaking news, maintaining a steady flow of content across website and social channels.
• Repurpose live radio and interview material into digital clips for online distribution.
• Use audience analytics and performance data to optimise content format, headlines, thumbnails and metadata.

Required profile

• Proven experience creating content across digital, social, radio and video platforms with a strong understanding of audience needs.
• Excellent writing, editing and storytelling skills in Igbo, capable of producing accurate, engaging and SEO‑aware copy under tight deadlines.
• Fluency in both Igbo and English and solid knowledge of Nigeria’s political, social and cultural landscape.
• Ability to present confidently on air and on screen for live and on‑demand programmes.
