Head of Medical Laboratory – Abuja

About the role

The client is a leading healthcare institution in Abuja seeking a strategic Head of Medical Laboratory to lead and oversee all laboratory services. The role focuses on delivering accurate, timely diagnostic results while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and international best practices.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and overall management of the Medical Laboratory Department, ensuring efficient, patient‑centered operations.
• Develop, implement, and enforce laboratory policies, SOPs, and operational standards in line with MLSCN and accreditation requirements.
• Establish and continuously improve Quality Management Systems, QA, QC, and accreditation programmes.
• Lead, mentor, and evaluate laboratory personnel, ensuring competency, licensing compliance, and professional development.
• Manage laboratory equipment procurement, installation, maintenance, calibration, validation, and troubleshooting.
• Oversee inventory of reagents, consumables and ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
• Prepare and manage departmental budgets, monitor costs and identify efficiency improvements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) or equivalent and full registration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
• Minimum 10 years post‑NYSC experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or laboratory management role.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
• Strong knowledge of Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC) and laboratory accreditation processes.
• Expertise in equipment maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting.
• Understanding of biosafety, infection prevention and control protocols.
