Heavy Duty Mechanic – Port Equipment Maintenance

About the role

The Heavy Duty Mechanic will ensure that all mobile and fixed port equipment at Dangote’s GDNL Terminal operates safely and efficiently. You will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining and repairing a range of heavy‑duty machinery to minimise downtime and support continuous port operations.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance and servicing of cranes, forklifts, trucks and other port handling equipment.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults using appropriate tools and techniques.
• Carry out corrective repairs promptly to restore equipment functionality.
• Interpret technical manuals, schematics and diagnostic data to guide maintenance actions.
• Identify potential defects and recommend preventive or corrective measures.
• Coordinate maintenance schedules with operations and other maintenance personnel.
• Maintain accurate service logs, maintenance records and spare‑parts accountability.
• Adhere strictly to health, safety and environmental policies.

Required profile

• Minimum O/Level qualification (WAEC/NECO/GCE/NABTEB) and vocational certification.
• Trade Test Certificates (I, II, III) in Mechanical Engineering Craft Practice, Heavy Duty Mechanics or equivalent.
• At least five years of hands‑on experience with heavy‑duty vehicle and industrial machinery maintenance.
• High physical stamina and ability to work in demanding dockside or workshop environments.
• Strong understanding of industrial safety procedures.

• Heavy diesel engine knowledge.

• Basic machining and welding.
• Use of diagnostic tools such as scan tools, digital multimeters and pressure gauges.
• Reading technical manuals, hydraulic schematics and electrical wiring diagrams.
