Community Development Advisor – Inclusive Landscape Management

About the role

As the Community Development Advisor for the Soil Values project in Nigeria, you will lead the community engagement approach, integrating inclusive landscape management (ILM) into project activities. You will work with SNV, IFDC, IWMI and other partners to drive participatory planning, capacity building and sustainable soil fertility practices across river basins.

Key responsibilities

• Mobilise communities, local authorities, women’s and youth organisations around a shared vision of sustainable landscape management.
• Conduct participatory assessments using PRA tools and Geoportal data to identify soil fertility, water management and land‑degradation challenges.
• Facilitate the development of inclusive integrated landscape management plans, defining priorities, roles and coordination mechanisms.
• Organise training sessions, farmer field schools, demonstration plots and community learning initiatives on agro‑ecology, soil fertility and climate‑resilient practices.
• Support the adoption and dissemination of sustainable practices by farmers, community facilitators and local groups.
• Promote meaningful participation of women, youth and vulnerable groups in line with the GESI approach.
• Establish feedback, participatory monitoring and adaptive management mechanisms and document lessons learned for reporting.

Required profile

• Proven experience in community‑based landscape or watershed management and inclusive stakeholder engagement.
• Strong facilitation, coaching and conflict‑sensitive skills, with ability to work with diverse actors including farmers, local authorities and development partners.
• Demonstrated capacity to design and deliver training programmes and to develop participatory action plans.
• Cultural sensitivity and fluency in local languages is an advantage.
