Senior Accountant

About the role

Our client is looking for a highly skilled Senior Accountant to join the finance team in Port Harcourt, supporting the Head of Accounts in a fast‑paced retail/FMCG environment. You will oversee general ledger maintenance, statutory compliance and lead a small team of accounting officers.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly and annual financial statements and drive the GL closing process within five working days.
• Perform monthly Cost of Sales to inventory reconciliations, investigate gross‑margin variances and stock losses.
• Ensure timely filing and payment of VAT, WHT, PAYE, and corporate income tax and manage audit trails for regulatory reviews.
• Supervise, train and review the work of four direct‑report accounting officers to maintain accuracy and standardised procedures.
• Identify and recommend system enhancements and process improvements to increase financial efficiency and control.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
• ICA or ACCA qualification (mandatory).
• Minimum 7 years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a senior or supervisory role.
• Proven experience in retail, supermarket or FMCG environments handling high transaction volumes.
• Strong knowledge of IFRS and Nigerian tax regulations.

Required skills

• Proficiency with QuickBooks or a similar ERP system.
• Advanced Excel and analytical skills.
