Director – Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Director of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) to lead all HEMM operations across our quarry and mining sites in Africa. Based in Lagos, the role provides strategic leadership, technical oversight and ensures optimal equipment availability, productivity and safety.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement a group‑wide HEMM strategy aligned with mining, quarry and production objectives.
• Optimize fleet size, composition and deployment to achieve high utilization of excavators, dump trucks, wheel loaders, dozers and graders.
• Drive fleet availability, reliability and productivity targets across all sites.
• Establish preventive and predictive maintenance frameworks and oversee equipment health monitoring systems.
• Lead root‑cause analysis of major equipment failures and reduce breakdown frequency.
• Manage spare‑parts planning, inventory and vendor partnerships to control maintenance costs.
• Negotiate and manage contracts with OEMs and service providers, promoting refurbishment and lifecycle cost optimisation.
• Collaborate with mining and quarry teams to align fleet operations with mine plans, blasting schedules and production targets.
• Deploy and optimise Fleet Management Systems, telematics, GPS tracking and predictive‑maintenance analytics.
• Champion safety compliance, capital budgeting and investment planning for new HEMM acquisitions, including evaluation of electric and low‑emission equipment.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering or a related field; MBA or postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
• 20–25+ years of experience in HEMM, mining equipment, quarry operations or heavy‑industry operations.
• Minimum 10 years in senior leadership roles managing large equipment fleets.
• Proven track record of strategic fleet optimisation, maintenance cost control and safety leadership.
