Consultant – Nutrition Formulation for MAM Treatment Blend

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a short‑term consultant to lead the nutrition formulation of a moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) treatment blend, known locally as Tom Brown, for Northeast Nigeria. The role runs for two months between May and June 2026 and focuses on creating a safer, more consistent, treatment‑grade product that remains affordable and familiar to local caregivers.

Key responsibilities

• Define target nutritional profiles and formulation guardrails aligned with WHO, WFP, UNICEF, and Nigerian regulatory standards.
• Develop 3–4 candidate reformulations using locally available ingredients.
• Assess nutritional strengths, gaps, risks, and trade‑offs for each option.
• Provide technical advice on fortification, premix selection, bioavailability, nutrient stability, and ingredient interactions.
• Identify preparation, sensory, acceptability, and caregiver‑use risks for pilot testing.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Nutrition, Food Science, or a related field.
• Proven experience in formulating therapeutic foods for malnutrition.
• Familiarity with international nutrition guidelines and Nigerian food regulations.
• Ability to work independently and deliver results within a tight timeframe.
